1. What does 'magnified' mean? Being made bigger.
2. What is a microscope and how does it help scientists? An instrument used to make very tiny things look bigger. It's useful when scientists need to zoom into very small specimens.
3. What is a specimen? The object being looked at through the microscope.
4. What is a light microscope? A microscope that uses light to reveal the image.
5. What is an image (in scientific terms)? What is seen through the microscope.
6. What is the difference between a LIGHT microscope and a BINOCULAR microscope? LIGHT MICROSCOPE: has one ocular lens BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE: has 2 ocular lens
7. What are the different parts of the microscope and what do they do?
Eyepiece and Objective Lens Magnifies the image
Stage Where the specimen is placed
Mirror/Lamp Directs light up through the stage and specimen
Handle For carrying the microscope
Fine Focus Knob and Course Focus Knob Fine Focus: used to focus the image on high power Course Focus: used to focus the image on lower power
8. What is a Stereo Microscope? A binocular microscope that creates a 3D image
9. What is a dissection? To cut apart a dead plant or animal to study it
10. What is magnification? The amount by which the image is magnified compared to the real object (specimen)
11. What is a micrometre? 1000th of a millimeter or one millionth of a metre. Used for measuring very tiny objects as millimetres might be too big.
12. What is an electron microscope and what is it used for? A microscope that uses beams of electrons to magnify up to 1 million times. Its used for higher magnification.
13. What are the 2 types of electron microscopes and what do they stand for? SEM: Scanning Electron Microscopes TEM: Transmission Electron Microscopes
