Question | Answer |
Describe microscopically Bordetella | G- rods motile with peritrochous flagella |
How does it attack sugars? | Doesn't because it only needs amino acids for energy. |
Samples used for detection | Nasal swaps, tracheal aspirates and exudates |
Growing conditions | 37°C for 24-48h on MCC or selective media |
Appearance on MAC | Colourless pale colonies Lac - |
Selective agars used for Bordetella & their composition? | ~ Regan-Lowe: charcoal + horse blood+ cephalexin ~ Bordet-Gengou: potato + sheep blood + glycerol |
Treatment for Bordetella | Antibiotics if persistent but not always 100%- can be resistant |
Test for bordetella | Cat + Ox + Motility + except B.parapertussis |
Name 4 pathogenic species | B.bronchiseptica B.avium B.parapertussis B.pertussis |
What does B.avium cause? | Bordetellosis in turkey and quails |
What is bordetellosis? | highly infectious acute upper respiratory tract disease with low mortality but high morbidity. |
What is the result after B.parapertussis infection? | Less severe pertussis and pneumonia in lambs. |
What does B.bronchiseptica cause? | 1) Atrophic rhinitis in pigs. 2) Canine infectious tracheobronchitis- kennel's cough. 3) Respiratory infections in horses. 4) Pneumonia, bronchitis and laryngitis in cats. 5) URT infection in rabbits. 6) Bronchopneumonia in lab rodents. = RESPIRATORY PATHOGEN |
Describe atrophic rhinitis | Progressive wasting away or decrease in size (atrophy) of the mucous nasal lining and underlying bone. Bloody sneezing. |
What is kennel cough? | Attacks the cilia lining the respiratory tract and cause inflammation of the upper airway, leads to irritation of the airways and a dry cough. It is named kennel cough because it can quickly spread through a kennel and infect every dog. Can be transmitted by aerosols released when a sick animal coughs, by direct contact , or by the sharing of contaminated objects. Kennel cough causes a persistent cough that may sound as if something is caught in the dog's throat and they are gagging or trying to clear their throat |
What does B.pertussis cause? | Whooping cough-pertussis. Highly contagious. Severe coughing with whoop or gasp sounds so strong that may lead to vomiting or breaking of ribs. Babies may not cough but have periods w/o breathing. |
Name important virulence factors for bordetella | Fimbriae, tracheal cytotoxin that kills ciliated cells, osteotoxin, LPS, and SOS is DNT- dermonecrotic toxin- induces skin necrosis and impairs osteogenesis, make it easier to break ribs |
