Question Answer
Tell me about Single Circulatory Systems... Low pressure, flows around the body in a single circuit, the heart has two chambers, deoxygenated blood is pumped to the gills, then oxygenated blood is pumped to the body. e.g. fish
Tell me about Double Circulatory Systems... Heart has four chambers e.g. humans
What does the CORONARY ARTERY do? It supplies the heart itself with glucose and oxygen.
What does the PULMONARY VEIN do? It carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
What does the AORTA do? It carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
What does the VENA CAVA do? It carries deoxygenated blood from the parts of the body back to the heart.
What does the PULMONARY ARTERY do? It carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
This needs a constant supply of glucose and oxygen to release energy through respiration. THE HEART
Carry blood under high pressure away from the heart. ARTERIES
Have valves to prevent backflow. VEINS
The heart pumps blood around the body through... BLOOD VESSELS
Name 3 places that you can take your pulse neck, wrist, ear or temple
A measure of the heart beat (muscle contraction) to put the blood under pressure... A PULSE
The heart beat is controlled by groups of cells called... THE PACEMAKER
What does a pacemaker do? Produces small electrical impulses, which spread across the heart muscle, stimulating it to contract.
What is the SINOATRIAL NODE (SAN)? It provides impulses that spread across the atria to make them contract.
What is the ATRIOVENTRICULAR NODE (AVN)? It relays impulses that spread over the ventricles to make them contract.
What is the name of a hormone that can alter the heart rate? ADRENALINE
What is the test called where you can monitor the electrical impulses from the heart? ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG)
What is the test called that uses ultrasound to produce an image of the beating heart? ECHOCARDIOGRAM
