Question Answer
What is an enzyme? Type of protein that accelerates a chemical reaction
What are the five features of enzymes? 1. They don't make anything happen that wouldn't happen on its own. 2. No organism can survive without them. 3. One enzyme can be reused w/o changing. 4. One enzyme can usually be used for both forward and reverse reactions. 5. Each enzyme is highly selective of its substrate.
What are two things that affect the rate of enzyme reactions? 1. Temperature (can destroy enzymes) 2. pH (most around 7)
What is activation energy and how is it affected by enzymes? The amount of energy needed to start reactions can be lowered by enzymes, resulting in a faster reaction rate.
What is a substrate? The substance an enzyme acts upon.
Active Site Area of the enzyme that binds to the substrate.
How do cells regulate enzyme activity? 1. Controlling the amount of the enzyme. 2. Converting the enzyme from inactive to active. 3. Feedback inhibition: activity inhibited by amount of product
