Thomas Malthus - 1766 - 1834 - Scientific developments lead to overpopulation and future demand for resources, which will lead to climate change disaster.
Malthus Facts - Essay on population written at the end of the 18th century - Population growth was a geometric progression (1,2,4,8,16, etc) and food supply increased arithmetically (1,2,3,4,5, etc). At the point of a Malthusian Crisis - 'Preventative and positive checks' would reduce the population.
Preventative Checks Reducing birth rates, for example contraceptives or ante-natal policies.
Positive Checks Increasing death rate, for example, famine, disease or war.
Ester Boserup - Technology would help meet the demand for resources. - GM Crops - Industrialisation - 1910 - 1999 - Quote: "Necessity is the mother of invention"
Boserup facts - Sees population growth as having a positive impact - Rising population induces agricultural innovation, because the land is used more intensively - An anti-Malthusian view - Human ingenuity can resolve resource shortages - Potential for GM crops feeding Sub-Saharan Africa
