Question Answer
What is Biology? Biology is the study of living things which are also called organisms.
What can living things have the ability of? Living things have the ability of: Growth Respiration Irritation Movement Nutrition Excretion Reproduction (Sexually and A-sexually)
What is Growth? The permanent increase in size of an organism.
What is Respiration? The release of energy from food sometimes using oxygen (with oxygen is aerobic) (Without oxygen is anaerobic)
What is Irritation? The ability of an organism to detect and respond to stimuli.
What is Movement? This is the ability of an organism to change position of part or the entire body of the organism.
What is Nutrition? The intake of food that is used for repairs, growth and maintenance of good health.
What is Excretion? This is the removal of metabolic waste from the body, this is waste that has undergone chemical reactions in the body like sweat urine and breath.
What is Reproduction? This is to ensure the continuation of a species. This can be done in two ways: Sexually- requires a male and female, fertilization must occur and the offspring is genetically different from the parents. A-Sexually- requires only one parent, fertilization does not occur and the offspring is genetically identical to the parent.
What is the Environment? This is the surroundings of an organism.
What is Ecology? This is the study between the interactions of an organism and its environment
What is a Habitat? This is the place where an organism lives.
What is a Population? This is a group of organisms of the same species, living in the same place, at the same time and are able to breed with one another.
What is a Community? This is several different populations living in the same place, at the same time
What is an ecosystem? This is a community and its environment.
What is Niche? This is the role/part an organism has to play in its ecosystem.
What is a Species? A group of similar organisms that are able to interbreed.
What are the 2 Latin Words which are found in the scientific name given to a species? They are the generic name and the specific name.
What is a Kingdom? This is the main groups that all organisms are placed. There are five groups:
What is a Kingdom divided into? A Phylum (Plural: Phyla)
What is a Phylum divided into? A class
What are the Phyla in the Kingdom Animalia? They are: Arthropod Annelid Mollusc Echinodermata Chordata Porifera Cnidaria
What are the classes in Arthropod? They are: Crustacean Insects Arachnids Diplopoda Chilopoda
What are the classes in Chordata? They are: Reptile Amphibian Mammal Aves Pisces
What are animals and characteristics of animals in the Phylum Cnidaria? The animals found in Cnidaria are Corals, Jellyfish and Sea Anemone. Characteristics of these animals are: They have a body wall made up of only 2 layers of cells. They have a ring of tentacles and a mouth in the center. They only have one opening to there gut.
What are animals and their characteristics found in Echinodermata? The animals found in Echinodermata are star fish, sea urchins and sand dollars. Characteristics of these animals are: They have five-part radial symmetry. They have body walls that contain calcareous particles. Many have a shell with projecting spines.
What are characteristics of animals found in Arthropoda? Arthropods contain: no back bone jointed legs waterproof exoskeleton
What are animals and their characteristics found in Crustacea? The animals found in crustacea are crabs, lobsters and woodlice. Characteristics of these animals are: They have 4 pairs of jointed legs They aren't millipedes or centipedes They breathe through gills.
