Question Answer
What is statistics? It is the science of data
What are the two systems that make up statistics? deterministic and random
what is deterministic? No matter how many times you do a calculation, the answer will always be the same
What is random? the calculated data can be different every time you try it. e.g. rolling a die
which system do we study in this class? the random system
what is a population? a collection of objects, people, plants, animals, or patients that can be studied
why do we usually only study part of a population by randomly selecting a sample? most populations are two large to study and many would require a lot of money and man power that just isn't available.
What is an experimental study? a form of data collection used mostly by the physical sciences such as biologists, chemists, and medical researchers. use the random selection of individuals to test a treatment through experiments
What is an observational study? a type of data collection used mostly by social sciences such as psychlogy, sociology, and marketing researchers where data is collected using surveys, polls, and marketing research to collect data about the human populations opinions
name some probability samples. systematic, stratified, cluster, and simple random
name some non-probability samples. snowball, quotas, convenience, judgment.
how do you select a sample from a very large population? use of the simple random model, where all individuals have an equal chance of being selected
What is qualitative data? category or group data
what is quantitative data? data that is recorded on a naturally occurring scale.
