Question | Answer |
Mountain Uses- Hydro-electric power The Yuncan Dam | Location: Pasco, Peru 350km NE of Lima |
Key Facts | - Deep valleys in Andes are perfect for HEP - Snow melt fuels most of the water for the dam. -50% of Peru's energy comes from HEP |
Positives | -Reliable renewable energy = less env't damage - Less effective in winter (less snowmelt) - Water can be reused for irrigation |
Negatives | -Very expensive(Yuncan Dam $262 million) -Flooded villages = communities destroyed -Silt fills dam over time = less energy made |
The Future | Reduction in water (due to glacial retreat because of global warming) will reduce production of HEP. This will make energy supply inconsistent for the people relying on HEP. |
