Question Answer
Functions of a cell? Protection and support Movement Communication Growth and repair Metabolism and energy
Nerve cells specialise in communication and integration of information.
Muscle cells specialise in in contraction and movement
Blood cells specialise in transport and defense
Lung cells specialise in the movement of gases
Gut cells specialise in absorption and secretion.
Lining cells/epithelial cells have several functions
Structure of cell membrane Phospholipid bilayer Cholesterol Proteins attached carbohydrates
Membrane function Barrier between inside and outside of the cell Controls the entry of materials (transport) Receives chemical and mechanical signals Transmits signals between intra and extra cellular spaces.
What is the cytoplasm? Contains the cells contents Includes organelles and cytosol Excludes the nucleus
What is cytosol? The medium in which the cell's chemical reactions take place.
What are ribosomes? Site of protein synthesis Contain ribosomal RNA (Ribonucleic acid) Can be attached to endoplasmic reticulum or can be free in cytosol
Ribosomes are composed of two sub-units... one small and one large.
Smooth and Rough Endoplasmic reticulum Syntheisis and intracellular transport Lipid synthesis- completed by both smooth and rough ER. Protein synthesis - rough ER only. Protein modification. Transport around the cell.
Golgi complex Modify and package proteins. E.g. lipoproteins and glycoproteins. Some packaged into vesicles Lysosomes
Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes
Small bodies in a cell? Lysosomes Peroxisomes Proteasomes Granules
Peroxisomes function? Oxidise for detoxification
Proteasomes function? Digest proteins.
Granules contain? Fuel stores, e.g glycogen granules.
Mitochondrial function? Energy (ATP) production. Where oxygen is used up. Where nutrients are burned to generate energy in the form of ATP.
Nucleus structure? Round or oval structure. Surrounded by a nuclear envelope. Openings = nuclear pores. Can include a nucleolus.
Nucleus function? Store genetic material. Contains DNA. Can copy information for transfer.
