Question | Answer |
What are the 4 different types of tissue? | Epithelial Connective Muscle Nervous |
Epithelial tissue is | Lining tissue which covers the body's surfaces. Lines body cavities, hollow organs and ducts. Forms glands (glandular epithelium). |
General features of epithelial tissue? | Closely packed cells. Single or multiple layers of cells. Adjacent cells linked together by cell junctions. Bottom layer of cells sits on the basement membrane. No blood vessels. Nerves sometimes can penetrate the layers of cells. Has a great capacity for renewal. |
Functions of epithelial tissue? | Protection from infection, harmful environment etc. Secretion of fluids, sweat etc. Absorption of nutrients, fluids, chemicals. Excretion - removal of waste products. |
Number of cell layers? | Simple Stratified Psuedostratified |
Simple cell layer | Single layer |
Stratified? | More than one layer of cells. |
Pseudostratified? | Single layer, but not all cells reach the surface. Appears layered, but isn't. |
Cell shapes | Squamous (flat) Cuboidal Columnar Transitional (variety of shapes) |
Transitional epithelium is found in? | The urinary bladder. |
Endocrine glands secrete? | hormones which diffuse into the blood after passing through interstitial fluid. |
Exocrine glands? | Release secretory products into ducts. |
Exocrine secrete? | Mucus, saliva, digestive enzymes, tears, sweat, milk and oil. |
Endocrine secrete? | Hormones. |
