How did the British empire effect the liberal reforms?	- the government wanted a strong army to call upon to defend their empire - in the Beor war (1899 - 1902) many men were unfit to fight due to malnutrition growing up in some place up to 67% were unfit and the army had to lower the minimum hight
How did social reformers cause the re-forms?	- work from influential people lead to new attitudes from the government - was now believed it wasn't the poor's fault they were poor + it was the governments responsibility
How political rivalry caused the re- forms ?	-labours popularity was rising - the working class could now vote after 1867 the liberals were worried of loosing votes
Increased information about the problem?	- charities (salvation army) sent in information - civil servants conducted studies
How did industry effect the re-forms?	-Britain was the world super power but was being overtaken by Germany and America. Germany had very good welfare projects - needed a strong work force to maintain power - foreign competition
Key individuals'	- Churchill = president of the board of trade + switched from conservatives to liberal ( for job, hated labour, may have believed in doing tuff for the poor) - David Lloyd George = grew up in poverty with a single mother , had experienced poverty first hand. knew the poor wasn't the poor's fault chancellor of excheque
