Question Answer
"Guys like us, that work on the ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world" - Theme of Loneliness George says this in Section One, when expressing his personal opinion towards the 1930's Great Depression dilemma and how it is affecting the ranch men; who have to endure getting "canned" and go travelling for new work daily.
"Lennie - if you jus' happen to get into trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an' hide in the brush" - Theme of Violence, Foreshadowing and Orders. George tells Lennie in Section One, that if he ever gets into trouble, to go where the brush is and hide. Now, Steinbeck has created foreboding of impending doom on George and Lennie here, as it turns out Lennie does go to the brush to hide, ironically remembering this order which leads to his death by George's hand... Steinbeck has been clever here, by making George the one to find Lennie, as it was George who gave the imperative that Lennie go there.
"Lennie was looking helplessly to George for instruction" - Theme of Disability and Prejudice George is superior to Lennie through intelligence and this quote proves that theory, as George is the one that Lennie depends on and he does not act without getting imperatives' instructions from George. George has the power in their relationship, but he uses it to protect Lennie from being taken to a mental hospital where he would be caged up like an animal. However, Lennie has the power and is superior through his strength; which is evidently his downfall and fatal flaw as a character.
