Question | Answer |
What is weathering? | Rain, sun, wind and frost constantly break down the rocks. The breaking up of the earth's surface in this way is due to weathering. Weathering takes place when the rocks are attacked by the weather. |
What is freeze-thaw weathering? | When it rains and the water goes in cracks in rocks and then freezes so expands and finally breaks into pieces. |
What is onion-skin weathering (exfoliation)? | It is when the rock is heated and cooled. The outer layer expands slightly. This happening the whole time (expansion and contraction) causes the layer to peel like an onion. |
What is bioloqical weathering? | This is when the roots of a plant push and force to grow more and be longer so it breaks up the ground beneath. Animals that habitat underground also do this by e.g digging. |
What is chemical weathering? | This is when the fumes from pollution go up to the sky and when it rains, the rain has acid in it from the polluted fumes. The acid destroys buildings, trees, statues, etc. |
What is erosion? | It is the wearing away of rock and its removal by streams, ice, waves and deposition help shape the land. |
What type of erosion has a sand paper effect? | Corrasion. |
What type of erosion has chemical and salt reactions with certain minerals in rocks? | Corrosion. |
What type of erosion has the force and power of waves erode the coast? | Hydraulic action. |
What type of erosion has its air compressed in cracks in a rock/ cliff when a wave crashes in to it? | Hydraulic pressure. |
What type of erosion has wave and sea currents move the pieces of broken rock in the water? | Attrition. |
How do rivers shape the land? | Rivers erode, transport and deposit material. This helps shape the land. V-shaped valleys are a common feature in its upper course. |

What causes waterfalls? | Many waterfalls are a result of water wearing away soft rock more quickly than the hard rock. As waterfall erodes back a gorge may be produced. |
What is a gorge? |

What happens on a river bend? | The water gushes onto the outsideof the river and erodes it whilst the inside of the river is built up by deposition. |

What is a flood plain? | It is a flat piece of land which is on either side of the river. It has a muddy material called alluvium/ slit which is a fertile soil and very good for farming but bad for farming when the flood plain gets flooded. |
How does the sea shape the coast EROISON LANDFORMS? | They are made by the wearing away of the coast. This is caused by to the types of erosion. Cliffs and rocks are affected by these erosions. |
How does the sea shape the coast BAYS? | Areas on the coast which have softer rocks are worn away more easily. They eventually become bays. |
How does the sea shape the coast HEADLANDS? | Areas on the coast which have harder rocks are worn away less easily. They eventually become headlands, which stick out into the sea. Headlands get eroded over time and turn into cracks, caves, arches, stacks, stumps. |
What are the 2 deposition landforms? | Beaches and spits. |
How is a beach formed? | Material is worn away (eroded). This material is then moved (transported) by waves and currents to somewhere else along the coast. When the material is dropped (deposited) it may eventually lead tot he formation of a beach. |
How is a spit formed? | This is a special type of beach. It extends into the sea. It normally grows across a bay. |
What are some methods used to help reduce coastal erosion? | Sea walls, beach rebuilding, groynes and rip-rap (rock armour). |
