Troubles caused by tourism
1. Helicopters and cruise ships scare animals
2. The spillage of fuel kill mussels and fish, as well as the birds that feed on them
3. Tourists could accidentally introduce non-native species or diseases that could wipe out existing species
Strategies
1. The Antarctic Treaty 1961
  1. Countries are free to carry scientific research, but must share their results
  2. Testing of nuclear weapon and the dumping of radioactive waste are forbidden
  3. Has been signed by around 50 countries
  4. Designed to protect and conserve the area and its wildlife
  5. Since April 2009 only ships with fewer than 500 passengers are allowed to land there and a maximum of 100 passengers are allowed on shore at a time
