The maid
represents the
expectations of
Victorian
women
"The maid
fainted" chapter
3, The Carew
Murder Case
This conforms with the frailty
associated with Victorian women and
promotes it because it seems likely
that this act may have saved the
girl's life
It is significant that all of the female
characters are unnamed in contrast to all of
the male characters which are not only more
substantial but are also all named. This is
reflective of the Victorian hierarchy which
positioned men always above women.
