Indians of the East clashed with frontiersmen
Americans wanted to expand to spread Democracy.
The American Promise
Land was sold in small sections to farmers for $1-2
Land speculators bought up land and sold it at a profit
Led to trade. For example Lewis and Clark set up fur trade routes.
Slavery
Expansion led to tensions over whether new states should have slavery.
The North disliked slavery for 3 reasons - economic - Religious - Political
Slavery was expanding due to the Cotton Gin, The Lousiana Purchase and the Missouri Compromise
