1. Invading Microorganisms
  1. Release of proinflammatory cytokines such as Tumor Necorsis Factor:, Interleukin-1 and other proinflammatory cytokines

Assessment
1. Clinical Presentation
  1. Cardiovascular
    1. Increased or decreased temperature
    2. Biventricular dilation: decreased ejection fraction
  2. Pulmonary
    1. Hyperventilation
    2. Respiratory alkalosis leading to respiratory acidosis
    3. Hypoxemia
    4. Respiratory Failure
    5. ARDS
    6. Pulmonary Hypertension
    7. Crackles
  3. Renal
    1. Decreasing urine output leading to oliguria
  4. Skini
    1. Warm and flushed (early sign)
    2. Cool & mottled (Late sign)
  5. Neuro
    1. Altered mental state
    2. Agitation
    3. Coma (late stage)
  6. Gastrointestinal
    1. GI bleeding
    2. Paralytic Ileus
  7. Other Diagnostic Findings
    1. Increased or decreased White Blood Cell count
    2. Decreased platelets
    3. Increased lactate
    4. Increased glucose
    5. Increased urine specific gravity
    6. Decreased Urine Sodium
    7. Positive Blood Cultures
