BLOOD
  1. 45% Red Blood Cells
    1. contain haemoglobin, which binds/ carries oxygenated releases it in hypoxic areas.
      1. Haemoglobin contains iron, which makes RBCs red. Anaemia is a serious disease caused by lack of iron
        1. Made in the bone marrow- skull & pelvis
          1. Bioconcave shape to increase high SA
            1. RBCs are stripped of al organelles, including the nucleus, so that they can contain maximum haemoglobin to carry the maximum amount of oxygen.
              1. Flexible to squeeze through tiny capillaries
                1. Transport oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body
                  1. In the lungs, haemoglobin react with oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin, In body tissues the reverse happens to release oxygen into the cells.
                    1. NO nucleus- frees up space for more haemoglobin, so they can carry more oxygen
                      1. 49% Plasma
                          1. Pale yellow liquid that carries just about everything that needs transporting around the body
                            1. Red and white blood cells and platelets
                              1. digested food products-glucose, amino acids, sugars, fat, salts, minerals- from the gut to all body cells
                                1. Carbon dioxide from body cells to lungs
                                  1. Urea from the liver to the kidneys
                                    1. hormons- chemical messengers
                                      1. Heat energy
                                        1. antibodies
                                          1. clotting proteins
                                          2. High water content
                                            1. helps maintain body temp.
                                            2. 4% Platelets
                                              1. when you damage a blood vessel platelets clump together to help form a clot
                                                  1. blood clots stop you losing too much blood and prevent micro-organisms from entering the wound
                                                    1. in clots, platelets are held together by a mesh of protein called fibrin, these tangle up red blood cells to help from a clot
                                                    2. 1% White Blood Cells
                                                      1. 5 kind of white blood cells- neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils and basophils
                                                        1. important for immune system
                                                            1. some can engulf bacteria and other pathogens by phagocytosis. They can change shape easily and produce enzymes that digest the pathogens.
                                                              1. some can secrete antibodies that help destroy pathogens
