    1. Russian communist revolution
      1. Fear that immigrants would bring communism to USA
    2. 1919
      1. 400,000 americans went on strike and race riots in 25 towns against communism
        1. April 1919- bomb planted in Milwaukee church killed 10 people
          1. May 1919- bombs posted to 36 prominent americans
            1. June 1919- more bombs in 7 cities, US attorney Mitchell Palmer killed
            2. J. Edgar Hoover ( young clerk) built files on 60,000 communist suspects which resulted in about 10,000 being deported
              1. Trade unionists, blacks, Jews, Catholics and other minorities became accused of being communist
