400,000 americans went on strike and race riots in 25 towns against communism
April 1919- bomb planted in Milwaukee church killed 10 people
May 1919- bombs posted to 36 prominent americans
June 1919- more bombs in 7 cities, US attorney Mitchell Palmer killed
J. Edgar Hoover ( young clerk) built files on 60,000 communist suspects which resulted in about 10,000 being deported
Trade unionists, blacks, Jews, Catholics and other minorities became accused of being communist
