units of heredity that maintain their structural identity throughout generations. Genes come in pairs and are bundled into 23 chromosomes
Chromosome- strands of genes that also come in pairs.
2 x chromosomes = female
1 x and 1 y chromosome = male
Heterozygous- unmatched pair of genes on the two chromosomes. Dominant genotype is expressed as phenotype.
Dominant genes- gene expresses itself in either pairing
Homozygous- identical pair of genes on the two chromosomes. Dominant or recessive genotype is expressed as phenotype
Recessive genes- gene requires full pairing in order to be expressed.
