urate crystals precipitate within joint - infl occurs - gout attack, repeated cause tophi formation
CM's - gouty arthritis, tophi, gouty nephropathy, uric acid urinary calculi,
normally at night, wakened w/ pain, redness, swelling, warmth in joint
brought on by alcohol, dieting, trauma, medications, surgical stress, illness
Meds/treatment
colchicine, NSAID's, corticosteroids for acute attacks; probenecid (uricosuric) reduce serum uric acid and dissolve urate crystals; allopurinol if renal insufficiency/kidney stones
