Germany sent out their ships to look for Admiral Beatty's
ships. They reached a fighting distance of around 8 miles.
Britain start to lose, and so they drive back to where the main
British battleships are. They lead them to a T. The T was were the
British were angled side ways and the Germans were vertical.
The British had an advantage as they had most of their guns on
the side whereas the Germans were facing forward and so had
limited guns to shoot with.
The British Navy won and took
control of the area in which they
battled in.

Armistice was signed at 6am and
came to force 5 hours later.
11/11/1918 armistice was signed.
Armistice is a
form of truce
between the
allies and the
entente.
Schlieffen Plan
The Schlieffen Plan was the German army's
attempt to invade Belgium and get through to Paris.
Assumptions made by the Germans.
The Russian Mobilisation would be slow and
they though it would take around 6 weeks.
The Belgians would cooperate with
them and let them walk through.
Great Britain would not intervene.
Reality of the Schleiffen Plan
The Belgians didn't cooperate but fought
against them and later the prevented the
Germans from taking over the French Chanel
Ports by flooding most of their land.
Britain did intervene and the declared war on
Germany. the 250,000 British men were well
equipped and well trained. They were ready for
action within less than one week. They helped the
Belgians at Mons, so moved on to help the French
on the River Marne and prevented the Germans
from reaching Paris.
The Russian mobilised their troops
faster than expected. They took 10 days
to be ready to invade Germany, which is
aot faster than the Germans anticipated.
The Germans then had to switch troops
away from the Western Front to hold up
the Russian invasion.
BEF intervention- 1914
Stands for British Expeditionary Force
The BEF were a group of men sent from
the government to France and Ireland
when there was a cause for concern about
the possibility of a German invasion in
both countries.
US entry
Entered on the 6th April 1917
More than 2 million men
from the US went to France
to help the allies win the war.
Some American men wanted to stay neutral and
not get involved in the war but they did, and
fought along side the GB and France.
German allies.
Germany was part of
the Triple Alliance.
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
were members of the Triple Alliance.
Italy were not strong allies as they got
involved when they wanted to and pulled
back when victory seemed unlikely. They
were not a reliable ally in the war.
Germany had the biggest
involvement in the war
from the countries in the
Triple Alliance.
Failure of Operation Michael.
Germany decided to attack on the
Western Front, and tried to split the
French and British troops.
Short Term Results.
Germany had broken through the troops and had
advanced towards Amiens around 40 miles.
Victory seemed likely based on the advancement
and the splitting of the British and French troops.
Long Term Results.
The Germans had lost a lot of men and their
casualties had reached around 1 million.
GB had driven the Germans back a little
more with help from the French troops.
On the 8th August, there was the
Black Day of Germany army.
they continually retreated.
November 1918, Revolution in
German as the Kaiser was
removed.
Failure at Verdun
Battle on the Western Front between the
French and the German.
21st February-18th February 1916
France had recaptured the lad the
Germans had taken, and pushed
them back as well.
French casualties were 377,000 and
the German casualties were 337,000.
Blockade
Blockade is sealing of a place
or part of something in order to
prevent goods or people from
passing through.
The German Navy had lost the North Sea to
the English Navy. The British took control of
the sea and decided what could pass through
and what couldn't. they tried to eliminate the
supplies to Germany.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare.
The Germans needed to get their supplies to survive,
but they couldn't do it by boats as the British would stop
them and defeat them like Jutland.
They decided to use submarines to try and transport
goods to their country in order to get supplies.
This was one of the reasons
the US joined the war.
