  1. Carbohydrates
    1. Supply the energy in cells
      1. Made from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
        1. Potatoes, wheat and rice are starchy foods
          1. Storage of carbohydrates in animals is glycogen
            1. Cellulose is carbohydrate storage for plants in the cell wall
              1. Glucose is the the sugar for animals
                1. Is needed for energy
                  1. Tests of glucose
                    1. 1) Add Benedicts solution to glucose
                      1. 2) Put test tube in boiling water
                        1. 3) if glucose present will turn green --> yellow --> orange
                        2. Testing for starch
                          1. 1) Put starch solution into a test tube
                            1. 2) Add iodine
                              1. 3) If starch present will turn from blue --> black
                            2. Lipids
                              1. Contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
                                1. Made from glycerol and fatty acids
                                  1. Is needed for energy and insulation
                                    1. Too much fat can cause cholesterol
                                      1. Butter and oily fish contain a lot of fat
                                        1. Testing for fat
                                          1. 1) Put fat solution into a beaker
                                            1. 2) Add 2cm cubed of cooking oil
                                              1. 3) Shake
                                                1. 4) Add 2 cm cubed of water
                                                  1. 5) Shake
                                                2. Proteins
                                                  1. Contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
                                                    1. Needed for growth and repair
                                                      1. Meat, fish and cheese are high in protein
                                                        1. Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids
                                                          1. There are around 20 different types of amino acids in the body
                                                            1. Testing for protein
                                                              1. 1) Add copper sulphate to the protein solution
                                                                1. 2) Mix and add sodium hydroxide
                                                                  1. 3) If protein present will turn lilac
