Resource summary
B4: Photosynthesis
To make their own food plants take in...
Carbon Dioxide from the air through pores called Stomata
Water from the soil through root hairs
Equations
carbon dioxide + water ---(sunlight)---> glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O ---(sunlight)---> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What does the plant make in photosynthesis?
Food - this is glucose. Used for respiration and stored
Oxygen - waste gas that is produced. Used for respiration and given off through the Stomata to surroundings
Storing Glucose
Three Advantages...
Starch can be converted back into glucose for respiration in plant cells
Starch is insoluble and so will not dissolve in water
Starch does not affect the water concentration inside the cells
Plants trap the Sun's energy in Chlorophyll which is in Chloroplasts in their cells
They use this energy to build up carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen
