  1. Advantages
    1. Controls flooding downstream.
      1. Provides water to both urban and agricultural areas.
        1. HEP will provide 15% of China's electricity demand and hence reduce pressure & dependeny on coal.
          1. There are 32 turbines on the Dam, each can produce 50,000 kw.
            1. Total produced is equal to 20 nuclear power plants.
          2. Thousands of construction jobs were created.
            1. The dam will become a tourist attraction and pull many people to the area.
              1. Boost for the economy.
              2. Built to withstand an earthquake of 7.0 on the Richter scale.
              3. Disadvantages
                1. Downstream areas will be deprived of fertile sediment.
                  1. 1.3million people were forced to relocate.
                    1. Lost / Submerged
                      1. 1,000+ archaeological & historical sites have also been lost or submerged.
                        1. 100+ towns & villages have become submerged.
                        2. 265 billion gallons of raw sewage is dumped in the river annually but is prevented from flowing down stream.
                          1. City of Chongqing is a major contributor.
                          2. Several species of animals & plants have become threatended.
                            1. Chinese River Dolphin.
                            2. Increase in landslides and seismic activity.
                            3. About the Yangtze
                              1. 3rd longest river in the world.
                                1. Bank to bank 1.3 miles wide.
                                2. Floods reguarly, with a severe floods occuring on average every 10 years.
                                  1. 1998 an area the size of New Zealand flooded.
                                    1. $30billion USD worth of damage was caused.
                                    2. 300,000+ people have died as a result of the Yangtze floods.
                                      1. Catchment area is 1/5 of China.
                                        1. 360million+ people live in the watershed of the Yangtze.
