American Civil War
  1. It was a significant conflict in the history of the United States of America that took place between 1861 and 1865. The two sides confronted were the forces of the northern states (the Union) against the newly formed Confederate States of America, composed of eleven states Of the South who proclaimed their independence.
    1. The first act of war was the Confederate assault on the Fort Sumter garrison on April 12, 1861. Army repression of Fort Sumter brought the Confederate states to Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Thus began the civil war between the Confederate States of the South and the States of the North, which would end the victory of the latter in 1865.
      1. During the war, more than 10,000 military confrontations took place, of which 40% were recorded in Virginia and Tennessee.
      2. Lee surrendered his army from Virginia on April 9, 1865, in the Appomattox courthouse. In a rare gesture that showed Grant's respect for Lee, and in anticipation of the return of the Confederate states to the Union, Lee was allowed to keep possession of his officer's saber and his horse, Traveler.
