The reason for Robert supporting The Wave so much was because the Wave
transforms him the most. At the start of the book Robert was the class
"loser," has zero friends (as it seems), gets picked on by his peers, and does
not care to learn in academic subjects. However, after the first few days, The
Wave allows Robert to feel accepted. During this experiment Robert
becomes popular, he has more friends, and begins to take care of himself,
and started caring about academics. He also volunteered to be Mr. Ross's
bodyguard in order to protect him and The Wave. This will all change for
Robert though since The Wave came to a conclusion.
Laurie
Laurie is the most popular and
smart person in here grade.
Initially, Laurie is on board with
The Wave and believes that it will
have a positive impact on her
class. Once Laurie comes to the
realization that Wave members
have to give up their individuality,
independence, and freedom in
order to be equal she is disturbed
and resists The Wave. Additionally,
she speaks out against The Wave
and writes an article in the school
newspaper to expose the Wave to
parents and school officials. This
shows her traits: A strong sense of
individuality, independence, and
personal identity.
David
At first he likes the idea of The Wave because
he thinks that it will help his sports (football
school) team. He becomes so caught up in The
Wave that he almost hurts Laurie his
girlfriend. After pushing Laurie after he warns
her not to expose The Wave he realizes the
dangers of The Wave and rejects it.
Amy
Before The Wave Amy felt like she
had to measure up to her popular
and smart best friend (Laurie). Now
with The Wave Amy does not have to
be better than Laurie because she is
equal to her.
Mr. Ross
Ben Ross is a History teacher for the seniors in
Gordon High. Ben Ross was the founder and
creator of The Wave. He created The Wave
because his class asked him how the Germans
could have allowed the Nazi death camps to exist
and he does not know the answer. The Wave was
an experiment to show the answer, but during the
experiment he gets caught up in it. The Wave
causes Ben Ross to become corrupted with power
and enjoy the power and control he holds over his
students. He also enjoys having a bodyguard
(Robert).
Other Wave members
Wave members think
that are
superior to non -
Wave members.
