Do you know how this small Valencian town became home to the world’s biggest tomato fight? It can be traced back to a brawl in the street in 1945 when some youngsters tried to join an annual Giants and Big-Heads figures parade, but accidentally knocked down one of the giants. In a fit of rage, the man started swinging at people in his path. Not to be outdone, these young people threw at him tomatoes grabbed from a nearby vegetable stand until the police arrived to separate them. The following years these young people returned with their own tomatoes and repeated the fight. Though the police tried to ban the tradition, the event grows in popularity year after year. Eventually, the festival became official in 1957.
