India's Caste System:The development gap can create differences not just between the rich and poor but also between groups of people in the same country. The caste system is a religious and social class system where classes are defined by birth and family. Dalits - lowest status - known as untouchables - work in unhealthy, unpleasant or polluting jobs, suffering from social prejudice, segregation and extreme poverty.
