If you are focused on one thing, and do not expect changes to appear, then you can easily miss changes that do occur

You don't want to assume that the user will notice changes that occur. Make it obvious that a change has occurred by using different visual or audio cues.

This phenomenon is known as inattention blindness or change blindness.

It was the gorilla on slide 4. If you missed it, its because you were too focused on the bright type on the right side that is taking all of your attention, and the gorilla does not stand out because of the background.
