What is the Purpose of the Patrician Carrying busts? These kinds of statues were used to demonstrate lineage, as Patricians were the only people allowed to have portraits of family members it showed how their heritage helped them to be seen as a pillar of the community.
What is the definition of Patrician? Patrician is the name of someone who belonged to the aristocratic social class in Roman times.
What is it made from? Marble
How tall is it? 1.65m
What style is it? Versitc / Verism. Which is the artistic preference of contemporary everyday subject matter instead of the heroic or legendary in art and literature; a form of realism. *The word comes from Latin verus (true)*
A part of this statue has been replaced. What part? The head of the Patrician has been replaced, but is still keeping with the verstic style.
Who is depicted by the bust in the Patricians right hand (Lower One)? When was it made? Patrician's Father: 40 - 30 BC - Short hair which was carved using short sharp incisions. - The pupils were not carved and would have been painted.
Who is depicted by the bust in the Patricians left hand (Higher One)? When was it made? Patrician's Grandfather: 50 BC -Balding. - Wrinkles and Creases around eyes and mouth. *(The date is indicated by how the bust stops just below the neck)*
What are two traits of the Patrician that show the style? He has large ears and a large nose. He has sunken cheeks. *These show how the person sculpting this made no attempt to hide flaws of the subject*
What is the purpose of the date palm in this statue? It supports the weight of the bust of his father (right hand)
Why is it likely that this statue is a copy of an earlier bronze one? As families grew duplicates were needed which were likely made from a mold of the original.
