Definition: Metamorphic Rock A metamorphic rock is a type of rock which has been changed by extreme heat and pressure, and can originate from sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks
Definition: Sedimentary Rock Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment, especially sediment transported by water (rivers, lakes, and oceans), ice (glaciers), and wind. Sedimentary rocks are often deposited in layers, and frequently contain fossils.
Definition: Igneous Rock Rocks formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten materials. Igneous rocks can form in magma, under the earths surface, or at its surface, as lava. The rocks formed in magma have larger crystals as the cooling process takes longer.
Definition: Luster the state or quality of shining by reflecting light; glitter, sparkle, sheen, or gloss
Definition: Colour The colour of the mineral; Transparent, White, Pink, ect
Definition: Streak If the mineral when dragged across a surface leaves a streak of colour, showing it's a soft mineral.
Definition: Hardness How hard the mineral is, when referring to the Mohs scale of hardness or the tests, steak ect.
Definition: Moh's Hardness Scale A scale that list minerals from 1-10 on the level of strength they have, 10- Diamond, which is mainly used for jewelry and 1- Talc, which is turned into talcum powder or baby powder.
Description: Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary Rocks are made from Sediments through the process of erosion and weathering. Sedimentary Rocks take thousands of years to form. They often contain fossils, this is because of the amount if time the rocks take to form, they layers that they form in, and the surrounding temperature.
Description: Igneous Rock Igneous Rocks are made from cooled magma or lava. Igneous rocks will not always have crystals in the them, as crystals need to form slowly, if the lava cools to fast then crystals
Description: Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic Rocks can begin as either Sedimentary or Igneous. The heat from the magma or lava. The rock doesn't change, the heat only compacts the rock, causing the layers in the Sedimentary rock to form orderly arrangement.
Description: Mineral A mineral is a naturally occurring homogeneous solid( a solid, liquid, or gaseous mixture), formed by single element or inorganic compound.
definition: Physical Weathering A physical form of weathering/erosion, which is mainly performed through harsh environments, e.g. Wind blowing sand, wearing away at rocks, rocks being split apart by tree roots, hole being worn in rocks by the action of dripping water.
definition: Chemical Weathering A chemical form of weathering is when chemicals formed by pollution or man made substances, e.g. Crumbling of sedimentary due to acidic rainwater dissolving the cement between the particles, Limestone rock dissolving in acidic.
definition: Erosion The movement of sediments by water, wind, ice or gravity. Fast moving water carries larger particles than slower flowing water; fast flowing rivers normally have rocky bottoms and slow rivers have sandy or muddy bottoms. Glaciers cause great weathering, wind causes erosion, especially in desert landscapes as there are no plants for sediments to grip on to.
Definition: Weathering The gradual breakdown of rocks into sediments, e.g. the breakdown of rocks forms soil. Water expands when frozen, breaking the rock in the process; it's called ice wedging. Wind also weathers rocks, e.g. wind carries away grains of sand and other sediments.
Definition: Deposition Occurs in places where moving water or wind slows down and cannot carry the sediments any further. Water moving down carries sediments and rock particles with it. The heavier particles are dropped first and smaller particles are dropped later, e.g. River deltas, sand bars, gravel bars. Sediments carried by glaciers pushed into ice are called moraine.
