Minority Influence Creates a conversion process - Consistency - Commitment - Flexibility
Consistency - First assume the minority is an error - If the minority is consistent, the majority become reassured - Nemeth, 2010 - Wood et al, 1994 - meta-analysis of 97studies - More consistent = More influential
Commitment - Suggests certainty, confidence and courage - Commitment is generally higher than within the majority - More commitment = More influential
Flexibility - Mugny, 1982 - Flexibility is more effective at changing the view of the majority than the rigidity of arguing - Minorities are typically powerless compared to the majority and must negotiate their position.
Key Study: MOSCOVICI et al. (1969) - 4 naïve participants and 2 confed - Blue slides that varied minutely - Confed said blue slides were green - Consistent = Every trial = 8% - Inconsistent = 2/3 = 2% - Control = >1%
