What are the three fibrous joints? 1. Sutures eg. skull bones 2. Syndesmosis eg. Ulna/radius 3. Gomphosis eg. PDL

What are the three types of sutures? 1. Squamous 2. Serrated 3. Denticulate
What is the main difference between fibrous and cartilaginous joints? Fibrous have fibrous connective tissue, while cartilaginous have hyaline/fibrocartilage between them Cartilaginous are more moveable
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints? 1. Synchrondoses (Primary w/ hyaline) eg. Between long bones 2. Symphysis (Secondary w/ fibrocartilage, partially moveable) eg. between intervertebral discs
What are 6 features of synovial joints? 1. Articular cartilage (hyaline) on top of bones 2. Joint cavity w synovial fluid 3. Joint capsule 4. Synovial membrane 5. Discs (some) dividing joint into more cavities 6. Bursae (some) sacs w synovial fluid
How many layers does the joint capsule have? Two Outer fibrous layer and thin inner synovial membrane layer
What is the function of the synovial membrane? Rich capillary network Capable of secreting/absorbing synovial fluid for lubrication
What are 3 other ways to classify joints? 1) Joint Shapes - Ball and socket (Hip) - Condyloid (wrist) - Hinge (Elbow) - Plane/gliding (Wrist) - Pivot - Ellipsoid (Thumb) - Saddled-shape (Thumb) 2) Movements - Extension vs Flexion - Abduction vs Adduction - Rotation (External vs Internal) - Supination vs Pronation - Inversion vs Eversion 3) Axis of Rotation - Uniaxial - Bixaxial - Multiaxial
