Mitosis is division of the nucleus into two genetically identical daughter nuclei. Mitosis has four phases Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase. Before Mitosis can occur all the DNA in the nucleus has to be replicated during Interphase. Mitosis occurs in Eukaryotic cells during embryonic development, growth, tissue repair and asexual reproduction.
Chromosomes condense by supercoiling during Mitosis. Supercoiling refers to repeatedly coiling the DNA molecule to make the chromosome shorter and wider. Proteins called histones and enzymes are involved.
Cytokinesis occurs after mitosis and is different in plant an animal cells. Cytokinesis is the process after Mitosis where cell division occurs. In animal cells, a cleavage furrow is created as the plasma membrane is pulled inwards because of the contractile protein. In plant cells, vesicles form tubular structures in the equator to form two layers of membrane.
Interphase is a very active phase of the cell cycle with many processes occuring in the nucleus and cytoplasm. DNA replication in the nucleus and protein synthesis in the cytoplasm only occur during Interphase. Interphase consists of three phases, G1, S, and G2. Cells which are not going to divide enter a phase called G0.
Cyclins are involved in the control of the cell cycle. Cyclins are proteins that ensure that tasks are preformed at the right time. The bind to enzymes to Cylcin dependent Kinases. There are 4 main types of cyclins in humans, D, E, A, and B.
Mutagens, oncogenes and metastasis are involved in the development of primary and secondary tumors. Mutagens are carcinogenic agents the cause gene mutations which can cause cancer. Oncogenes are genes that have the ability to be cancerous. Metastasis is the movement of cells from a primary tumor to a secondary tumor.
The correlation between smoking and incidence of cancers. There is a positive correlation between smoking and the death rates of cancer. It is shown that the more cigarettes smoked the higher you're risking cancer.
