Basic (Fundamental) Postulate people act as scientists, predicting the world around them
Personal Constructs Tools used to interpret, explain, give meaning, predict the future
Templates changed and reframed when predictions are proved wrong
Construct system collection of malleable constructs
Constructive Alternativism how you apply constructs to a situation: Flexible or rigid
Supporting Corollaries 11 corollaries; can be inferred from basic postulate; construction, individuality, organization, modulation, commonality, sociality
Corollary: Construction based on whether events will repeat themselves
Corollary: Organization superordinate; subordinate
Corollary: Commonality similar constructs in tight groups/ families
Corollary: Sociality social exchange; roles(teacher/student)
Dichotomy Corollary there are two sides to every construct; individualized
Range Corollary includes all of the events to which the construct is relevant; range of convenience
Experience Corollary construct system varies as replications of events are successively construed.
Fragmentation Corollary different constructs are constantly being used; inconsistencies are inevitable
CPC Cycle circumspection phase, preemption, control phase
Loosened Construction Phase Constructs are flexible because they are still being tested
Tightened Construction Phase Working constructs have been found and tested, so they are used more rigidly
Kellian Motivation people are born motivated
Kellian Anxiety due to bad predictive efficiency. Sign of a failed CS
Kellian Hostility refusing to give up a construct that is ineffective (opposite of aggression)
Kellian Aggression applies constructs to things it shouldn't (opposite of hostility) forces a construct
Kellian Guilt act in a way inconsistent with construct of role (as husband/parent/friend)
Kellian Threat imminent change probable; threatens understanding of how things work
Fear similar to threat, but less severe
Learning altering CS for better predictive efficiency
Kellian Reinforcement validation of a construct causes repeated use of it
psychotherapy reframing of the individual's perspective is the main focus
fixed-role therapy therapist asks the client to act out a certain personality while in therapy; try on a different way of thinking
Criticism difficulty in predicting behavior, ignored important parts of the personality
