Validity - Definition | What is being measured - valid to requirement? "Agreement between a test score or measure and the quality it is believed to measure" (Kaplan & Saccuzzo, 2001) |
Validity - Face Validity | Appearance of a test e.g. Vernon & Parry (1949) Cook Selection Test - ostensibly measured cooking skills, but actually more a test of reading ability in practice. |
Content Validity | Often relates to attainment or ability tests. i.e. is the content relevant to the aspect being measured? - Content Under-representation; Construct-irrelevant variance |
Construct Validity | Underlying every test is an assumed construct to be assessed. Thus new tools must be tested against known existing tests in same and different domains, to determine the degree of alignment with the construct. |
Criterion-related Validity a) Concurrent Validity (2 tests); b) Predictive Validity (re future) | i.e. as compared to external criterion - how valid is the tool in predicting actual real-world competence? e.g. driving test c.f. being a good driver |
