Allusion Definition- an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. Example- the NASA spaceship.
Imagery Definition- visually descriptive or figurative language. Example- I could hear the popping and crackling as mum dropped the bacon into the frying pan, and soon the salty, greasy smell wafted toward
Metaphor Definition- a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Example- all the world's a stage.
Personification Definition- the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. Example- the winking stars.
Hyperbole Definition- exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. Example- I am a genius.
Irony Definition- the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Example- There are roaches infesting the office of a pest control service.
Symbol/Motif Definition- A motif is a recurring symbol which takes on a figurative meaning. Example- Life is a rollercoaster.
Foreshadowing Definition- Showing future events that will occur through texts. Example- The leaves fell early that year." (foreshadows an early death)
Mood Definition- literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. Example- the dog cried violently
Pathetic fallacy Definition- the attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals, especially in art and literature. Example- it was a dreary night of November
Climax Definition- the most intense, exciting, or important point of something; the culmination. Example- suddenly the ship snapped in half
Characterisation Definition- the way the author paints a picture of what a certain character is like. Example- the crooked, old, nasty man
