Who suggested that there are three ways in which people conform? Herbert Kelman (1958)
What are the three main types of conformity? Internalisation, Identification, Compliance
What are the main features of internalisation? This occurs when the person genuinely accepts the group norms in private and public. This is long lasting and is the deepest type.
What are the features of Identification? This occurs when we act in the same way as the group privately and publicly but is not long lasting.
What are the features of Compliance? This occurs when we go along with the group norms publicly but do not necessarily agree with them privately.
Who developed the two process theory? Deutsch and Gerard
What are the two reasons for conformity? informational social influence and normative social influence
What is ISI? We believe in the majority because we believe it is correct. Can lead to internalisation.
What is a strength for ISI? Lucas et al. asked students to give answers to mathematical problems that were easy or more difficult. There was greater conformity to incorrect answers when they were more difficult.
What is a limitation of ISI? ISI works differently in different people. Asch found that students were less conformist (28%) than other participants (37%)
What is NSI? We believe in the majority because we want to fit in and be liked. This can lead to compliance.
What is a strength of NSI? The variation of Asch's study were the participants wrote their answers down. The conformity dropped when writing, which shows that they were not being influence by the desire to fit in.
What is a limitation of NSI? McGhee and Teevan found that students high in need of affiliation were more likely to conform. This shows that NSI works differently for different people.
