What is blood pressure measured in? Millimetres of mercury, mmHg.
What is systolic pressure? This is the maximum pressure the heart produces.
What is diastolic pressure? This is the pressure between heart beats.
Name the factors that increase blood pressure. -Stress -High alcohol intake -Smoking -Being overweight
Name the factors that decrease blood pressure. -Regular exercise. -Eating a balanced diet.
What does high blood pressure cause? -Blood vessels to burst, causing damage to the brain, this is called a stroke. -Damage to the kidneys can be caused as well.
What does low blood pressure cause? -Dizziness and fainting, because of the poor blood supply to the brain. -Poor circulation, especially to the toes and fingers.
What is the definition of fitness? Ability to do physical activities.
What is the definition of health? Being free from diseases such as those caused by bacteria and viruses.
How is fitness generally measured? By the level cardiovascular fitness.
What are the different factors of fitness? -Strength -Flexibility -Stamina -Agility -Speed
How does the carbon monoxide in smoking increase blood pressure? Carbon monoxide decreases the blood carrying capacity. By combining with haemoglobin preventing it from doing so with oxygen, meaning less oxygen is carried. The heart rate then has to increase so the tissues receive enough oxygen.
How does nicotine from cigarettes do? It increases heart rate.
How is hart disease caused? By a restricted blood flow to the heart muscle.
How is the risk of heart disease increased? -High level of saturated fats in diet -High levels of salt in diet.
How does a high level of saturated fat in diet increase heart increase the risk of heart disease? Too many saturated fats lead to a build-up of cholesterol (plague) in arteries. The narrowing arteries reduce blood flow to the heart muscle.
What can plague also cause apart from heart disease? Blood clots or thrombosis.
