Latency Stage 6-12 A calm period. Energy is submerged. A time of ego development, particularly in relation to intellectual and social skills. Normally there is no fixation at this stage.
Genital Stage 13-18 Hormonal change now stimulate the re-emergence of the libido. An integrated set of adult sexual attitudes and feelings is developed. Fixation will lead to impaired sexual relationships.
Phallic Stage 3-6 Energy focus is on the genitals. Feelings become overtly sexual. Boys go through the Oedipus Complex and girls the Electra complex. The superego is born. Fixation = vain, reckless, self-centered, ambitious, exploits others personality traits and may be incapable of loving someone.
Anal Stage 1-3 The child gains satisfaction from expelling and withholding faeces as the energy is centered on the anus. Anal retentive personality from fixation = orderly, clean, miserly, obstinate and cruel. Anal expulsive personality from fixation = untidy, generous and impulsive.
Oral Stage 0-1 The ID is dominant. Energy is centered on the mouth, child gains satisfaction from biting and sucking. Fixation leads to dependent, trusting, gullible, excessive interest in eating, drinking and smoking personality traits.
