Process of photosynthesis The leaves of the plant make glucose and from CO2 and water by using light energy. This energy is captured by chlorophyll inside the chloroplasts of the leaves and converted to chemical energy in the glucose.
Equations for photosynthesis Carbon dioxide + water --> Glucose + oxygen 6CO² + 6H²0 --> C6H12O6 + 6O²
Simple controlled experiments for light, CO2 and chlorophyll in leaves. Experiment to show presence of oxygen. Light: Cover part of a leaf so it isn't exposed to light. CO2: Remove the CO2 from the air around a plant using soda lime. Chlorophyll: Use a variegated leaf Oxygen: Use Canadian pond weed in bright light and capture the gas created.
Adaptations of the leaf The leaves are this and flat so that as much light as possible can be absorbed and the gases have to diffuse a very short distance.
Importance of Osmosis Cell surface membrane is partially permeable. The plant cell is turgid, this turgor is very important so that the plant cells can support the structure of the plant.
Xylem and Phloem functions Xylem: Tissue made up of the cell walls of dead cells. It transports water and mineral ions up from the roots to the rest of the plant. Phloem: Tissue made of living cells. It transports sugars for energy and amino acids for cell building.
Transpiration Water leaves the leaf as water vapour through the stomata. It evaporates from the surface of the cells in the mesophyll, which cools down the leaf.
Tropisms Light: Phototropism Gravity: Geo tropism Water: Phototropism In positive tropism, growth is towards the direction of the stimulus. In negative tropism, growth is away.
