morphologic skills -morpheme: smallest element of grammar and meaning. May be words OR smaller grammatical units like prefixes, suffices, articles, prepositions, etc -free morphemes: stand alone to convey meaning bound morphemes: can't convey meaning on their own; are bound to free morphemes (like prefixes)
syntactic skills -rules of grammar and sentence construction -children must learn unique rules of the lang to which they are exposed -syntactic rules generally acquired by the time the child enters 1st grade -you can assess syntactic skills through lang samples, standardized tests, or other alternative approaches that have ethnocultural validity
pragmatic skills -pragmatics: the study of language as produced in social contexts -helps initiate and sustain conversation and narration, including: topic initiation, turn-taking, topic maintenance, topic shifts, social appropriateness of lang, eye contact, gestures & facial expression -pragmatic skills are heavily influenced by cultural factors -pragmatic skills develop :
prevalence of language disorders -difficult to determine due to exclusion/inclusion criteria -according to some data, ~12-13% of kids have lang disorders -SLI (specific lang impairment) prevalence: ~7-8%
