Pregunta Respuesta
Validity The extent to which an instrument reflects the concept being examined.
Face validity Items appear to reflect the concept they are supposed to test, (weakest form of validity).
Content validity Items making up an instrument adequately represent the concept as rated by content experts.
Criterion-related validity Outcomes of an instrument compare favorably to those from an established gold-standard criterion test.
Concurrent validity Establishes validity of a target test when two measures (target test and gold-standard test) taken at the same time have similar results.
Predictive validity Establishes validity of a target test when the target test predicts a future criterion score on a gold-standard test.
Construct validity The ability of an instrument to differentiate among similar concepts.
Contrasting group validity A type of construct validity in which groups known to be high or low on a characteristic are used to measure that construct.
Convergent validity A type of construct validity in which measurements that should be related are related when two tests are used. (If scores converge, the same construct is being measured).
Divergent validity A type of construct validity in which there are low or no correlations between scores on instruments measuring different characteristics by similar methods.
Factor A combination or cluster of related observed variables that represents a specific underlying dimension of a construct.
Factor Analysis Statistical procedure to determine if a set of items measure an underlying latent variable. Used to evaluate a questionnaire to determine if it is unidimensional or multidimensional.
Latent variable Something that cannot be directly measured.
Exploratory Factor Analysis Factor analysis performed on a set of items to determine underlying dimensions. Based on multiple general linear regression.
Confirmatory Factor Analysis Factor analysis to determine if an underlying structure is consistent with theory or previous research. Performed with structural equation modeling.
