November 1918 "The German Revolution" Germany surrenders and World War One ends. The Kaiser abdicates and is replaced by new Government based in Weimar, Germany
January 1919 (2 EVENTS) Spartacist Rising takes place in Berlin- fails- Freikorps kill Communists including leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. AND German Workers' Party formed under leadership of Anton Drexler
June 28th 1919 Treaty of Versailles signed in France, imposing strict conditions on Germany
July 1919 The official constitution (set of rules) for the Weimar Republic is made law
February 1920 The German Workers' Party (DAP) is rebranded the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP in German, Nazi for short)
March 1920 The Kapp Putsch- Wolfgang Kapp leads Freikorps into Berlin to seize control- backlash against ToV - STAB IN BACK Myth, failed as Gov asked workers to strike.
28th July 1921 Hitler formally elected as Nazi Party chairman
January 1923 French and Belgian troops occupy the industrial Ruhr area of Germany as response to Germany's non-payment of reparations
January-October 1923 Germany is gripped by Hyperinflation
What 3 events happened in November 1923? Stresemann calls of passive resistance in the Ruhr. Rentenmark replaced Reichsmark as German currency. Hitler makes first attempt to seize control of Germany - Munich (Beer Hall) Putsch FAILS
February 1924 The Dawes Plan is agreed between Germany and USA. USA lends money to Germany to help rebuild the economy.
April 1924 Hitler sent to Landsberg Prison for his part in Munich Putsch and Nazi Party banned in state of Bavaria
December 1924 Hitler is released from Landsberg Prison and ban on Nazis in Bavaria is lifted
February 1925 Hitler officially 're-launches' the Nazi Party following the lifting of the ban in Bavaria
May 1925 Paul von Hindenburg becomes president of the Weimar Republic
October 1925 The Locarno Treaty is signed improving relationships between Germany and France
September 1926 Germany joins League of Nations and remains member for 7 years
May 1928 Nazis only manage to win 3% of votes in Reichstag elections- seen as joke
October 1929 WALL STREET CRASH - New York Stock Exchange crashes triggering worldwide economic depression- THE GREAT DEPRESSION begins
May 1930 Nazis make first major breakthrough in elections increasing vote share from 3% to 18%
July 1932 Nazis win 230 seats (37.3%) in Reichstag making them largest single party but Hindenburg makes Franz von Papen chancellor
November 1932 Nazis lose 4% of their seats in Reichstag due to their violent actions but still remain largest party
December 1932 Hindenburg makes Von Schleicher chancellor, but this proves unpopular in the Reichstag
January 1933 Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany
27th February 1933 The Reichstag Fire- supposed 'Communist Plot'
23rd March 1933 The Enabling Act was passed giving Hitler power to make laws without consulting Reichstag
March-July 1933 Hitler destroys most of the organised opposition to Nazis in wake of Reichstag Fire
June 1933 Hitler signs a "Concordat" with Catholic Church that Nazis would leave Catholic Church alone if the Catholics stayed out of politics
June 1934 The Night of the Long Knives- Hitler destroys his rivals in the SA
August 1934 President Hindenburg dies. Hitler combines the office of Chancellor and President to become the Fuhrer (leader)
September 1935 The Nuremberg Race Laws are passed forbidding marriage of Aryans and Jews
August 1936 The Berlin Olympics gives Hitler and Goebbels chance to show off Nazism to the world
November 1938 Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) Jewish businesses and places of worship are attacked- no insurance, have to clean it up
September 1939 Germany invades Poland and triggers off World War Two
June 1941 Germany launches an invasion of the USSR (Russia)
January 1942 The "Final Solution of the Jewish Problem" is drawn up at Wannsee Conference in Germany
May 1943 The Warsaw Uprising- Jews imprisoned in Warsaw ghetto rise up against German soldiers
July 1944 Colonel von Stauffenberg attempts to assassinate Hitler using a bomb in a briefcase
April-May 1945 Hitler commits suicide and Germany surrenders to the Allied Powers (UK, USA, USSR). The War in Europe ends.
