Plants | Plants don't absorb food from their soil. They are food factories. They make all their own food and produce all their own Carbohydrates, Oils, Proteins and Vitamins. |
Photosynthesis | Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use light energy and carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen. 6CO2 +6H2O - C6H12O6 + 6O2 The plants use the glucose to produce energy or other chemicals. They also turn glucose into starch for storage. |
Seasons | Photosynthesis occurs more rapidly in the in summer due to the brighter light and the big leaves. Deciduous trees lose all of their leaves in autumn, which means their carbon dioxide uptake stops until the regrowth of the leaves in spring. |
Stomata | The Stoma is responsible for the diffusion of gases in and out. Oxygen diffuses in and Carbon Dioxide diffuses out. The leaves are found on the bottom of the leaf (the lower epidermis) |
Water and Sunlight | The water is absorbed by the root hair cells in the soil. These cells drain the soil of lots of things. Including Nitrates. The sunlight is absorbed by Chlorophyll (a green pigment found in the structures called chloroplast in leaves. |
Leaf Structure | The structure of a leaf is important to PS. The underside of the leaf is where the necessary gases diffuse in and out. The top of the leaf absorbs the sun's energy which is important to PS From Top to Bottom of Leaf: Cuticle Upper Epidermis Chloroplasts, nucleus and palisade cell Vein Xylem Phloem Spongy Layer Spongy Cell Air Space Guard Cells Stoma Lower Epidermis Cuticle |
