"Full of desire I lay, the sky wounding me" Full of desire usually positive In this case, the desire is consuming her
"Each cloud a ship without me sailing" Envious of tranquility, calm and freedom of sky and clouds Contrasts with her inner turmoil Unable to move on (idiom: Ship has sailed)
"mortal death, heartbreak" Conveys how important Raine thinks love is: One would die without it Hyperbole, conveys the extent of her feelings
"My human speech forsook my fingers" Losing grasp and control of her life Cannot express her emotions through words Enjambment: Cannot control her emotions
" and out of reach were Homer's ghosts, the savage conches of the beach" 'Ghosts' signifies she is troubled Calming images of beach now causes anger Literature (Odyssey and Iliad) now is out of reach (she cannot express herself through the English language) Enjambment: Cannot control her emotions
"The sky spoke to me in language clear" She can now understand English speech when she couldn't before The sky could symbolize how God spoke to her soul (Raine was a devout catholic) Volta - the words spoken completely changed her life
"Know now that you are born along with these clouds, winds and stars" Comparing her to nature. She shouldn't be jealous of nature as she is part of it Imperative, shows authority and wisdom
"This world you with the flower and with the tiger share" Juxtaposition. World is both delicate and fierce Life is filled with highs and lows -one cannot be without the other Contrasts with 1st stanza, when nature was wounding her
"Burned with the holy fire of passion" We are fueled by passion 'Holy' Love is sacred and important 'Holy' could also mean were are not fueled by romantic love, but God's love
Short stanzas Fleeting emotions, wants suffering to end quickly Idea of movement (moving on)
