Physical Geography of Cayman - Highest Point: Bluff - CB - tropical climate - National Flower: Banana Orchid
Human Geography of Cayman - population: 60 thousand (roughly) - language: English - Capital: George Town
Main Island Groups in Caribbean Greater Antilles Lesser Antilles v v v {Leeward Islands} {Windward Islands}
2 Islands in Greater Antilles: Jamaica Cuba
2 Islands in Leeward Islands Antigua Guadeloupe
2 Islands in Windward Islands Barbados Grenada
DEFINE Sustainable Tourism Tourists visit a country while being respectful to it and thinking about its future
How can we make tourism more sustainable in Cayman? - put recycling bins in public places - tour guides on Cayman's heritage and how to keep environment clean - install solar-powered stuff in buildings
What are MEDC and LEDC? MEDC - More Economically Developed Countries: rich LEDC - Less Economically Developed Countries: poor
Reasons for different Levels of Development Bad weather - can't grow food Natural / Human Hazards occur often not enough jobs for every1
DEFINE Fair Trade fairly paying farmers / workers
Why is fair trade important? BETTER FOR ENVIRONMENT & FARMERS Environment: don't use bad chemicals that would harm environment Farmers: don't have to breathe in harmful chemicals
Location of Corals - around Equator - none in Southern or Arctic Oceans - tropical areas
Coral Polyp Labeling
Conditions Corals Need to grow are: Sunlight Clean / Clear Water Saltwater the Right Water Temp.
Sunlight: Zooxanthellae in polyps need sunlight, so do polyps - can't develop too deep or sunlight won't reach them
Clean / Clear Water: Clear Water - needs to be clear so sunlight can reach polyps Clean Water - polyps sensitive to pollution and sediment
Saltwater: Corals only develop in saltwater - nowhere near freshwater
Water Temp: Develop in warm water temp. but if too hot could get coral bleaching
3 Types of Coral Reefs: Fringe Atoll Barrier
Formations: Fringe: seaward from shore, grows along shoreline Atoll: circular shape, lagoon in centre Barrier: like fringe but separated from shore
Uses of Coral Reefs? - homes for marine life - block big waves, protect islands / homes - tourism, $ for island
Threats Facing Coral Reefs? - boats, anchors dropping destroy them - tourists, if touch them - global warming, can make sea too warm, coral bleaching
How Can We Help Protect Coral Reefs? - turn off lights when not using them, heat from them can add to global warming - turn off tap while brushing teeth / don't waste water, wastewater can harm corals
Drainage Basin:
How Can Rainfall Reach a River? Surface Runoff: over the top of the ground Throughflow: diagonally through the ground Groundflow: after it sinks in, sideways
Why do Floods Happen? Loss of Trees Heavy Rain Impermeable Rock Steep Slopes
Loss of Trees: trees help prevent flooding: roots take in water leaves catch water Taking away trees will stop them from doing this
Heavy Rain: Rain = Water Lots of water making rivers over-flood or gathering up on streets
Impermeable Rock: (rocks / material water can't flow through) Means water will gather up in puddle instead of sinking into ground
Steep Slopes: Water will not have time to sink into ground - instead will run over ground quickly
Positive Impacts of Flooding: - makes soil more fertile - better land for keeping animals
Negative Impacts of Flooding: - houses destroyed - deaths (animal bites in water / diseases caught) - loss of food and water
