What are agents of tourism development? | The agents of tourism development are a range of commercial and non commercial organisations that often work in partnership to develop and promote a destination. These private, public and voluntary organisations have different agendas, aims and objectives. |
Private Sector Organisations E.g. Hotel Developers Retail Groups Entertainment and Leisure organisations | As commercial companies they are in business to maximise income and make a profit. The must ensure that customers have a positive perception of them so they often support social and environmental causes. |
Public Sector Organisations E.g. National Government National Tourist Boards TIC's English Heritage UNESCO | They are funded by the government, central or local, so they get involved in a successful project because it will help diversify the economy, bring financial benefits, aid economic development, increase the areas income, generate jobs and promote the area as a good and safe place to visit. |
Voluntary Sector Organisations E.g. Community Groups Pressure Groups - Tourism Concern Conservation Organisations - National Trust | They are not for profit organisations but they play an important role as they promote special causes and issues. Without their involvement many destinations worldwide would suffer and their traditions, culture and environment would be damaged. Any revenue generated is always invested back into the organisation and many rely on volunteers to deliver their services and advice. |
