Purpose of Health Education/Concepts
1. Educational
  1. To inform people of helth issues/to make informed choices
2. Self Empowerment
  1. To equip people with practicle skills, to help themselves
3. Preventive Medical
  1. Persuaded to pursue medically approved behaviours
4. Radical-Political
  1. Achieve change in social and ecconomic policy
Stages of Change Theory- Prochaska, DiClement & Norcross (1992)
1. Precontemplation
  1. Contemplation
    1. Preparation for Action
      1. Action
        Maintenance
        Maintains new behaviour changes > 6/12
        Has enacted consistant behaviour changes < 6/12
        Processes: Reinforcement managment, Helping relations, stimulus control
      2. Intention to change in next 6/12
        Possibly some behaviour changes
        Process: Self Liberation
    2. Reconises problem and seriously thinking about change
      1. Processes:Self re-evaluation
  2. Has problem, has no intention of changing
    1. Process: Concious raising, Enviromental re-evaluation
2. Limitations: No assessment on outside issues, on a persons ability to change, not always suitable for every population. Stages may not be clear for everyone
3. When stages have been shown, health promoters can tailor help/educate
  1. Behaviour, educate, work, strategies.
